Study: PET bottles have 90 percent retrieval rate in the Philippines

Polyethylene terephthalate or PET bottles are one of the most valuable forms of plastic in the Philippines and the most retrieved due to its high residual value – or its predicted value after consumption. PET bottles are commonly used in food and beverage packaging.

A study conducted by global advocacy firm McKinsey Center for Business and Environment showed that the Philippines has one of the highest PET bottle recovery rates at 90 percent.

“Higher residual value plastics are more likely to be collected from disposal sites and then resold. This means that products or packaging with low residual value is less likely to be collected; they, therefore, become a particularly significant contributor to ocean plastic,” the study, entitled “Stemming the Tide: Land-based Strategies for a Plastic-free Ocean” said.

Of the total post-consumption plastic waste produced in the country, 80 percent are low residual value plastics composed of sachets and single-use plastic bags owing to the local retail industry’s sachet-economy wherein products are packaged into single-use portions.

If PET bottles have a high extraction rate, it is quite the opposite of low residual value plastics. Often neglected by waste pickers, plastics belonging to the category have close to zero percentage collection rate.

“Waste pickers simply cannot generate enough wages from low-value plastics to warrant the time spent collecting them. We calculated the earnings for waste pickers using two metrics: the material value of the plastic waste in terms of the price paid for it by primary buyers (“junk shops”), and the average amount of time taken to extract the item from the waste stream. Over a ten-hour collection day focused exclusively on plastic bags, a waste picker might earn as little as P25 ($.50). Were the waste picker to focus on PET bottles, however, he or she might earn more than seven times that amount,” the study said.

Metro Manila has one of the highest plastic waste densities in the world – annually, the 620-square kilometer capital produces over 560,000 metric tons of plastic waste, which translates to about 900 metric tons per square kilometer. In comparison, the financial capital of China, Shanghai, has an annual plastic waste density of 200 metric tons per square kilometer.

While the country has an 85 to 90 percent waste collection average rate in urban areas, it plummets to less than 80 percent in rural areas. The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao has a collection rate of only 40 percent.

Another contributor to the growing post-consumption plastic waste problem is the lack of a proper waste management infrastructure. The study highlighted key areas where plastics are leaked into the oceans and these include rural areas that do not have a proper waste collection method due to its low waste density and high-density urban areas that are not able to cope with the influx of development. Illegal dumping by trash haulers and oversaturated dumpsites are also some areas that leak plastic waste into the oceans.

The growing post-consumption plastic waste problem is a real concern that needs to be resolved with the cooperation of all stakeholders in various industries and a revisit of the consumption methods of the general public.

Available with every Jolly Kiddie Meal, the Jollibee School Pals is a set of back-to-school toys, each with different functions, that enable kids to be more creative at home and inside the classroom.

Young students can use the Jollibee Sharpener to keep their pencils from getting dull as they watch Jollibee spin around. With the Hetty Tape Dispenser, they can make Hetty turn as they pull strips of adhesive tape for their school projects.

With the Popo Stamper, kids can watch Popo dribble the ball while they creatively decorate their projects. They can also use the Twirlie Notepad to write messages to their classmates by simply opening the base to get the notepad. After, they can pull the lever at the back to see Twirlie’s hands move with excitement.

Drawing lines and shapes is more fun with the Yum Multi-Tools. Kids just need to poke the opening at the bottom of the base to get the ruler, stencil, and paper clips. They can also turn the gear to watch Yum spin around.

The creation of the Digital Secured Stored Value supply has started the transformation of our Philippine peso into a digital fiat currency. The supply creation was led by RCBC President Gil Buenaventura, Asset Management and Remedial Head John Thomas Deveras, Chief Compliance Officer Ana Luisa Lim, Digital Banking Head Margarita Lopez, Chief Technology Officer Jonathan Lumain and Controllership Head Florentino Madonza, in the presence of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Deputy Director and Head of Core Information Technology Specialist Group Melchor Plabasan, Supervision and Examination Officer-In-Charge Ma. Belinda Caraan, and Central Point of Contact Department IV Officer-In-Charge Mary Ann Cube. RCBC’s ePiso is piloted under a regulatory sandbox initiative regulatory initiative with the BSP.

Digitized peso for every Filipino

The RCBC ePiso is Philippine pesos that are securely digitized so it will not be lost, stolen or counterfeited, unlike physical bills and coins which are prone to security risks and fraud. Everyone can have their money secured easily by going to the nearest partner merchant to convert physical pesos and coins to ePiso.

The ePiso is placed in a Mobile Wallet, a smartphone app which can be downloaded through Google Play, and will soon be available through the Apple Store.

Making life convenient and comfortable

The digitization of the peso aims to help Filipinos have easier access to financial services no matter where they are. Acquiring digital cash is very easy as users only need to go to sari-sari stores and accredited partners to convert their hard cash to “ePiso” digital cash for free.

Through the mobile wallet, users can buy goods at partner retailers, pay bills, or send money to other ePiso users without the risk of theft or be misplacing their money. With the mobile wallet, the ePiso is secured with password protection, on top of digital security layers, so the account owner is the only one who has access to his money. With ePiso, consumers can safely carry digital currency with them anywhere they go and have access to it anytime they want.

Digital payment solution for businesses

The RCBC ePiso model is also very flexible. It can be used for a faster exchange of payments for businesses, big and small alike. RCBC ePiso can be also be used to save on disbursement, transportation, collection and sending payment costs. Essentially, the objective of RCBC is to make the business process cheaper so that goods and services can be delivered to every Filipino faster and at less cost.

The creation of the ePiso supply is a testament to RCBC’s commitment to uplift the lives of Filipinos using digital technologies so they can reap the benefits of access to financial services and enjoy a convenient and comfortable lifestyle.

This summer, countless wide-eyed fans came for an experience of a lifetime with their favorite artists at the Mall of Asia Arena. The venue had one of its most jam-packed weeks of the year with back-to-back sold-out shows from some of the world’s biggest acts.

On April 28, passionate K-pop fans of EXO filled-up the Arena during the Elyxion concert, the 4th installment of the superstar group’s world tour. The multi-awarded K-pop band held a show complete with laser beams, a stylish bar, and light effects that matched their songs perfectly. With fans like EXO-Ls, the show took a mesmerizing turn as the audience made an ocean of silver with their light sticks moving to the beats of the band.

After his last concert with One Direction in 2015, May 1 saw the return of Harry Styles to the Philippines with his first solo tour. Harry did not disappoint as he serenaded his fans with a powerful performance.

“I only have one job here, and that is to entertain all of you,” said Styles as he rocked the Arena with hits “Sign of the Times” and “Only Angel” from his self-titled album.

Just a day after Harry’s show, the Arena was again filled with eager fans for another world-renowned performer: Bruno Mars.

The concert kicked off with a bang, as award-winning dance crew Jabawockeez took to the stage, and segued to Bruno Mars and his band, the Hooligans. The Grammy Award-winning artist brought the house down as he started off with his chart-topping hits “Finesse” and “24K Magic”.

The 2-day concert attracted Bruno Mars fans including local celebrities Vicky Belo, Vice Ganda, Ogie Alcasid, Luis Manzano, Jessy Mendiola, Carmina Villaroel, power couple Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes, Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Maxene Magalona. Some of the celebrities came with their families and friends.

The 24K Magic Tour Manila came to a close with Bruno dedicating “Just The Way You Are” to his beloved Filipino fans. Truly a tour to remember, his performance showered the crowd with gold confetti that matched his eclectic energy on stage.

May marks the anniversary of the Mall of Asia Arena, which launched its first show in 2012, with Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Ball Tour. As Manila is currently a hot scene for world-renowned acts, the venue takes pride in continuously being a host to many live shows. True to the vision of the SM Group to bring quality entertainment to the Philippines, the Arena has now become a valuable partner to the nation’s top promoters and organizers who repeatedly chooses the Mall of Asia Arena as an avenue for their events.

Ka-Cebuana Stories: The Priceless Value of Pawning

During times of need, it pays to have a friend to turn to for help. After all, even the best ones fall on hard times and setbacks are inevitable in life. For Gloria Fontanilla of La Union, Betty Mallon Talavera of Iloilo, and Lordini Yupano of Aklan, help came in the form of pawning, a practice that provided assistance all three women greatly needed at several points of their lives. Whether it’s to help finance a livelihood or to afford basic needs, giving up valuables for instant cash has proven to be a worthwhile financing solution for many Filipinos.

Although single, Gloria took it upon herself to help her sister’s children finish school. All four of her nephews and nieces were attending college at the same time so the expenses came in lumps and there were times when her budget would fall short. During these instances, she had to pawn her jewelry in order to produce money. For her, it was worth it because she knows the value of education.
“Mahalaga yung mga na-isanla ko pero mas mahalaga yung pag-aaral nila. Ayokong mahinto kaya nagsanla muna ako,” said Gloria about her decision to pawn her items for her loved ones.
Aside from the tuition fees of her nieces and nephews, Gloria also resorted to pawning to fund her businesses. An Agriculture graduate, she maintains a small piggery, which she started in 1985. She is also a seamstress just like her mother.
At 59 years old, Gloria has the choice to support only herself, but she chooses to extend assistance to loved ones instead. When times are tough and she herself needs some assistance, she is glad that she has someone to rely on.
“Nakatulong talaga ang Cebuana. Malaking tulong’ yan sa amin ng mga pamangkin ko. Kung walang Cebuana, wala akong ibang matatakbuhan. Yun lang ang alam ko. Cebuana lang talaga,”she said.

Meanwhile, in Molo, Iloilo, Betty has her own story of sacrifice. With eight children to support, she cannot emphasize enough the importance of hard work and perseverance. As Betty juggled household chores and her job in a salon, her husband was plying the streets as a jeepney driver to support their family. Both of them had dreams for their children so they did all the hard work that it took to give their children quality education.
Eventually, their sacrifices paid off and all eight of their children finished college and became respectable professionals; a seaman, an engineer, a nurse, an automotive specialist, a call center agent, two managers at the Dubai Duty-Free office, while one holds a key position in a local telecommunications company.
For Betty, all the success that their family achieved would not be possible without the help that they were given. When asked what she has learned from all the struggles they went through, she emphasized that God must be the center of the family and that it is important to pay it forward.

“Dapat humble ka at dapat tumutulong ka sa iba. At kahit ano man ang mangyari, kailangan pamilya ang nauuna,” she said.
Aside from relatives and friends, Betty has also sought the assistance of Cebuana Lhuillier when they were in need. She tells that when she was younger, she managed to collect some jewelry which came in handy when she already had her own family. Through pawning, she was able to pay her dues when she was strapped for cash. Now with five grandchildren, she realizes that giving up these items was well worth the rewards.

At the young age of 14, Lordini, who hails from Aklan, had to step up and take on the responsibilities of her father when he passed away. As the eldest of a brood of seven, she had to put aside her own studies and prioritize the education and needs of her siblings.
Lordini had to find different ways to make money in order to keep her siblings in school. Although uncertain about her chances of achieving anything, she eventually decided to try her luck in Manila where she worked as a maid, as a saleslady, and a street vendor. No matter how difficult, she was able to sustain the education of her six brothers and sisters until they finished college, not minding that she herself was not able to continue her studies after high school.
Whenever she had enough money, Lordini would reward herself with some jewelry. This was at a time when she was much younger and gold was less expensive. Little did she know that, as she would later become a single mother of two, such acquisitions would help her through some financial difficulties.
With her penchant for jewelry and having discovered the benefits of pawning, Lordini became an alajera and now has her own jewelry business, which has been her primary source of income. She still continues to pawn for the needs of her business and for the education of her two children who are in third-year college and grade 7th.
Aside from having been able to support the studies of her six siblings, the savvy 39-year old is proud to now have her own home.

Three women with three different stories of strength, compassion, and success. Gloria, Betty, and Lordini represent many of the Filipinos have to make countless sacrifices in order to surpass life’s challenges and put other people’s well-being before their own. Success comes in different forms and interpretations, and for these three women, its true essence is being able to share blessings and achievements with others—be it a sibling, a nephew, or a daughter.

Ka-Cebuana Stories is a series of articles featuring Cebuana Lhuillier clients and stakeholders in celebration of the company’s 30th anniversary.

Redefining Cooling Standards

Moving on to TCL’s latest cooling solution innovations, TCL is also proud to introduce the newest member of its inverter split type air conditioner line—the F2 series. This series is also an addition to TCL’s TitanGold Collection, which consists of air conditioners that are specially designed with gold-plated louver fins, ideally built to prevent and withstand extreme rusting and corrosion.

With its pearl white finish, LED temperature display, and silver-plated border, the F2 series surely exudes elegance from all its corners. In addition, this series is also equipped with a smart WiFi control, empowering users to conveniently take control over their comfort directly through their smart devices. As such, users can easily turn their air conditioning units on or off, and set the room temperature even from the outside—simply through the use of their smart devices. Indeed, TCL has perfectly integrated style and functionality into this series.

Filipinos and locals alike in Canada’s east coast hadan exciting Easter treat as Jollibee opened its first store in the Greater Toronto Area in early April.

On Saturday evening—hours before the grand opening—hundreds of Filipinos already camped-out in front of Jollibee Scarborough, located at 15 William Kitchen Road, eager to step inside the store to savor a taste of home.

The Jollibee Scarborough is the Filipino fast-food chain’s third store in Canada and the 40th store in North America.

Jollibee Scarborough is the Filipino fast-food chain’s third store in Canada and the 40thstore in North America. Here, residents can savor the crispylicious and juicylicious Jolly Crispy Chicken (more popularly known as Chickenjoy here in the Philippines), the tastiest and meatiest Jollibee Spaghetti, Palabok Fiesta, and the golden-brown Peach Mango Pie, among other langhap-sarap treats.

A Filipino gets a collectible Jollibee plush doll for being one of the first 100 customers.

No less than Jollibee welcomed Filipinos to the store, including its very first customer, Paul, who looked forward to enjoying the Jolly Crispy Chicken for the first time in six years.
Filipinos who waited through the night were surprised to see Jollibee welcoming them as Jollibee Scarborough finally opened its doors.

Other customers also received limited edition Jollibee collectible toys that celebrate and promote Filipino culture.

“For us, nothing brings greater joy than to bring people together over great-tasting food and happy moments. We are excited to bring to Scarborough the popular dishes that many now enjoy in different parts of the world,” said Jose MiƱana, Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) group president for North America.

Scarborough is home to an estimated 50,000 plus Filipinos and is one of the most popular destinations for new immigrants to reside. The Greater Toronto Area, where Scarborough is located, is the most populous metropolitan area in Canada with around 200,000 Filipinos residents.

“We look forward to bringing a familiar ‘taste of home’ to our countrymen in the Greater Toronto Area. Many may not know that this area is home to the largest Filipino community in Canada! And we won’t stop here – another location in Mississauga is in the pipeline for the year,” said Beth Dela Cruz, Jollibee North America vice president, and general manager.

How to Manage a Messy Car when Traveling with Kids

This is a sponsored post. All opinions are mine.

Do you remember the time when you and your partner boiled down the reasons for why and what kind of car will you two be purchasing? I remember when we decided to get the car we need, the budget was the main reason for it. Since we were just two at that time the convenience of getting the exact car model that fitted our budget became the main reason. But when we got kids, and extra space in the car starting to concern us, we traded our old car to a new one. And, that move was the best decision we made!

Every time we travel with the kids, we spend the whole day preparing their things and stuff to be loaded into the car.

These consists of; a bag of diapers, extra clothes, food, toys, and again bags of clothes. Although we tend to pack light, you can never pack light when you have kids. I guess this concern will eventually become a little concern when they can manage themselves to pack their own things for travel.

Since we enjoy the concept of traveling because it gives the kids the sense of adventure and time to bond with each other in a compact space, kids need to get occupied while on the road. And, food is one of the best distraction for them. I know parents like me will agree on this. Food can be a mess when traveling. During the course and the experience we had traveling with kids, we somehow learned how to manage a messy car. The most common item that can cause this is food, spills of liquid food and drinks, crumbs, fruit peels, strong scent of a certain food and sometimes, soaked diapers and soiled clothing.

A messy car can cause a lot of stress for both the parents and the kids. Here are some tips you can do to prevent a messy car:

  • always bring ziplock bags where you can dump food litters and trash, seal it every time to prevent leaking and also those unwanted smell.
  • plan food to bring for the whole duration of the trip, use coolers to preserve food.
  • separate each bags for each kid, this will prevent food pieces to drop on the floor.
  • recycle old sheets to use and cover on top of the car seat.
  • use cups with lids, make sure they are secure and with non-spillage.
  • empty trash from time to time during the course of the trip.
  • do not overpack with food that might spoil.
  • teaching is the best discipline. :)
There's no reason for the family not to enjoy a good family trip, it can be messy but it's all worthwhile.
So, start packing things and hit the road...create memories for you and your family to treasure.
